Thursday, August 2

Update: The surgery has been postponed pending a blood test. I will update as more information is available.

Today Baby Collin's parents were informed that he will undergo surgery which is scheduled for tomorrow, August 3rd. The surgery is called "STEP" (Serial Transverse Enteroplasty Procedure) and it is performed when the patient with "short gut syndrome" (which Collin has a result of losing parts of his small intestine) suffers from malabsorbtion. A description of the procedure, and an explanation of the causes requiring the procedure can be found at
this link . This diagram shows the procedure.
The Procedure

Please join our family as we pray for Collin's quick recovery and for God's hand to direct Dr. Sudan as she perfectly performs the amazing surgery which will elongate Collin's intestines.

Collin's amazing parents are taking this newest development in stride. Erin recounted a moment from Good Morning America that occurred yesterday when Robin Roberts was discussing her fight with breast cancer on air. Apparently Robin stated that when she first learned of the cancer, she asked "God, why is this happening TO me?" After reflection, she is now asking, "God why is this happening FOR me?"

Erin said that's how she and Matt are looking at this situation. They are thanking God for allowing Collin to receive this procedure when he obviously needs it. They are so grateful to be in Omaha, at the best surgical center IN THE WORLD for this procedure; where Collin is under the care of the best surgeon IN THE WORLD for this procedure. We are all also so grateful for your prayers!

After I spoke with Erin, I opened up a book my mom gave me, which I read daily. It was one recommended by Ms. Roberts as an inspirational tome her grandparents had passed it down to her. It is a devotional called, Streams in the Desert. Today’s entry begins with a line from Isaiah, “I will turn all my mountains into roads.” (Isaiah 49:11) The entry ends with this thought by F.B. Meyer, “The purpose of our trials is not only to test our worthiness but also to increase it, just as the mighty oak is tested by the storms as well as strengthened by them.”

Please, Lord, continue to strengthen and test our family.

Thankfully Nana V will travel to Omaha to be with our little family during and after the surgery. Matt's dad, Grandpa S, had previously scheduled a trip to Omaha for the weekend of August 10th (fabulous timing!) and I will be coming to Omaha soon after.

In addition, our large family (and wonderful friends) in town will be a great source of comfort to Erin and Matt. Your comments and prayers are also a great comfort to all of us! I can't thank you all enough.

Lora, I know your heart is heavy right now. Doug and I are so inspired by your positive outlook and the strength of your belief in His promise. I remember seeing Collin's picture in the beginning and thinking that he is a fighter and he will be just fine. Will keep you all in our prayers.

Can't wait for you to come home, I know that it will be such a comfort for the kids. So glad the other parents are coming, too. Family is so important at times like this.

May God bless you all!

Doug and Dianne
