Another day, another line!

It's hard to tell recently, from all of the cute, happy, active photos of Collin, but he still hasn't completely recovered from the stumbling block to his health which was the rotovirus.

It has been estimated that the rotovirus can kill up to 60% of the vili in the intestines. When someone with short gut (like Collin, who has about a third of a normal person's intestinal length) loses that 60% of vili, it can be fatal. Luckily Collin's parents and doctors caught that rotovirus quickly, and he was hospitalized immediately. (You'll recall that this happened around Valentine's Day.) Fortunately, the vili can and will grow back; unfortunately, it can take a while!

Since the rotovirus (otherwise known as "the time of upschuck & lotsa runny poo"), they have had a difficult time keeping Collin properly hydrated. It is common for short gut kids to "stool out" (diarrhea), unfortunately when stooling occurs, the child is not getting the nutrients and fluids they need. Several different things have been attempted to try and get Collin's intestines to start absorbing everything properly, nothing seems to work consistently. It's a mystery why Collin isn't healing faster.

This has been a frustrating time for his mom and dad (and the rest of Collin's family), because we so desperately want him feeling well and improving at the pace he once was! I said it in a post probably last year, the "steps back" are agonizing and his "steps forward" are so exhilarating! It's good to remind ourselves that what is happening with Collin is common with short gut kids; Collin is not alone.

Yesterday, after a full day of screaming and crying (and a bad night the evening before), Erin and Matt brought Collin into the emergency room. He had labs the day before, and overall everything seemed "ok", but Erin knew "something was wrong" with him. It's hard to put a finger on it, but he was taking shorter and less naps, was crankier and inconsolable. Sometimes he acts "goofy" and stumbles around, and that is an indicator that he might be dehydrated.

It turned out that he was, indeed, dehydrated, so he was admitted to the hospital.

He went into surgery to have a broviac catheter inserted early this afternoon, which will help keep him hydrated consistently. His mom will be able draw blood samples for labs from the broviac, and the laboratory will send a driver out to pick up the samples. This will be a great savings on her time and gas as they had been going into the clinic almost daily for labs. When Collin's labs are "normalized" and he is hydrated properly, the doctors may do an "upper g.i." to see what's going on in his small intestines, or they may do a colonoscopy. Right now it's all up in the air.

As always, your prayers and positive thoughts are precious to us. We will keep you all updated regarding Collin's progress!

Love to all!
Collin's Grandma

P.s.-Erin just called and Baby Collin is in recovery!!

P.s.s.-Erin called again...the labs are back and they solved the mystery! Collin has C. Difficile (a bacterial overgrowth) in his intestines. It's such a relief to find out the cause of the discomfort/stooling out/dehydration and now they can treat it. (Collin was diagnosed with C. diff last year in May, please check the August 3rd, 2007 entry for more information.) Hallelujah!

So they did the test today or put in the broviac?

Anyways, sending love and prayers to all of you from

They put in the broviac. Apparently testing his intestines would have caused MORE diarrhea and tummy discomfort, so they'll (maybe) try that when his labs start coming in "normal".

We're praying for YOUR little Collin Ryan, who should be making an appearance any day.

I am so sorry to hear there's been more steps backwards but I am so glad that there were some answers. Bless his heart and I pray that he is all better soon and everyone can go about a life without this stuff. :(

This is really good news you guys! :)

Hey Erin, you know I'm a bodyworker and I have a suggestion of something you can do that might help speed up the "regrowing" of the villi in Collin's intestine.

It's very easy and basically just involves you touching him with intention.

You would put one hand on his little belly right and the other hand on his back right across from your "top" hand. It would be good to do this while he is sleeping.

First, just establish a "connection" between your two hands. You probably won't really feel anything but just intending to make that connection is good enough. Just let one hand be aware of the other one and "see" or "feel" a connection going between them. You can practice this with your hands in front of you, hold them palm to palm and just feel some sort of connection between the two.

Once you've done that (which is already doing something big), then start to use your mind to "see" these villi growing back. You might want to use another image such as a little sprout growing out of the earth like a seed sprouting. Or you can look up online and see what the villi actually look like "little hairlike tubes". Then use your mind to just see these villi "sprouting" back inside him.

This might sound far fetched to you but the body/mind is a very real relationship and adults use this kind of approach all the time in things like reducing tumors and the like with great benefit!

I just thought it might give you something to do to help him yourself while he is recovering and no one really needs to know what you are doing...it would just look like you are holding him in that way.

Close your eyes and use the power of YOUR mind to help feed this process happening in him.

Hope this helps!

Auntie katie :)

Shoot, meant to say but was typing too fast to put the top hand right over his entire belly. Oops!

Here is a photo online of what the villi look like. you can see that some are smaller and some bigger and some. Just visualizing them sprouting and growing...

Just one more thought, you can't hurt him with this, there is no pressure involved, it's just using the energy of your own body to help stimulate this process. As my teacher tells us "the worst thing that can happen is nothing!". So I think it's worth a try!

Hey Gma Lora! Sorry I missed your call the other day...was traveling and trying to get around in NYC. I assume that your call is related to all this. I feel so awful that I missed all this information. I keep Collin, Erin and Matt in my thoughts and prayers all the time but am so awful about making time to connect and see them.

I'm so glad to hear that he's doing better and that the mystery has been solved. Now we gotta get those little bugger bacteria out! Love and hugs to the entire family. Miss you all!
